Gold Testing Equipment: Acids, Electronic Testers, and What Your Counter Needs

Every counter that buys gold lives and dies by one question: is it real, and what karat? Get it right and gold buying is excellent business. Get it wrong twice and it wasn’t. Here is the honest rundown of gold testing methods and the equipment worth owning.

The acid kit: the classic for a reason. Karat-graded acid solutions with a test stone remain the trade’s trusted baseline… scratch, apply, read the reaction. Acids are inexpensive, dependable, and karat-specific in trained hands. The trade-offs: they mark the piece slightly, they consume supplies, and reading reactions well is a learned skill. Every gold-buying counter should still have a fresh kit… emphasis on fresh, because aged acids read wrong. Replace them on schedule, not on memory.

Electronic gold testers: speed and customer comfort. Modern electronic testers read karat in seconds without visible marking… which customers selling grandma’s jewelry deeply appreciate. They excel at fast triage and high-volume buying days. Their limits: surfaces can fool them (heavy plating over base metal), so technique matters… test in an inconspicuous filed spot when a piece raises eyebrows, and confirm oddities with acid.

The layered defense. Experienced buyers run layers: magnet check (gold is not magnetic… instant filter), weight-and-feel judgment, electronic test for speed, acid confirmation on anything big or strange. For counters buying serious volume, specific-gravity testing and advanced analysis are the next tier. The pattern is the point: no single tool, a workflow.

Don’t forget the loupe. The cheapest tester on the bench is a 10x loupe and knowledge of hallmarks… a plated piece often confesses at the stamp long before the acids come out. Karat stamps guide the test; they never replace it.

From acid kits and test stones to electronic gold testers, we supply the equipment gold-buying counters rely on… wholesale, from one source, for 30+ years. Browse gold testing tools or call (210) 341-7783.
